ST. GEORGE, UTAH – Westminster women's soccer (3-0-2, 0-0-1 RMAC) opened conference play with a 1-1 draw at Dixie State (2-1-2, 0-0-1 RMAC) on Sunday at Trailblazer Stadium. With the tie, the Griffins remain unbeaten in 2019.
The Griffins and Trailblazers played to a scoreless tie in the first half, with each team taking four shots. Westminster had three corner kicks to Dixie State's one.
The Trailblazers scored almost eight minutes into the second half, taking a 1-0 lead in the 53
rd minute on Whitley Johns second goal of the season.
From there, the Griffins controlled the ball, outshooting the Trailblazers 14 shots to five after halftime and forcing Dixie State goalkeeper Chandler Greenwood into eight total saves, six in the second half. Westminster would get its equalizer in the 67
th minute when
Brynnae Braun scored her second goal of the season, with
Sarah Reiber getting credit for the assist.
The two teams played two overtime periods to try and break the tie, but neither team found the back of the net and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Westminster goalkeeper Hilary Weixler and the Griffins' back line gave up just their second goal of the season. Weixler has just two goals against in five games.
Westminster returns home next weekend for a pair of conference games, hosting Black Hills State on Friday at 5 p.m. and Regis University on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Dumke Field and will be
streamed live.
