GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The women's lacrosse team defeated Adams State, 23-2, and secured its spot in the Women's Lacrosse Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Championship.
The goals came quick and early as Westminster took control of the game. The Griffins made a 10-2 run in the opening eight minutes. They went on to score another eight to finish the half leading, 18-2.
Westminster took its foot off the pedal in the second half. The Griffins took only seven shots the remainder of the game. With five second half goals and shutting the Grizzlies out, the Griffins won the game, 23-2.
Westminster took 34 shots, 27 on goal, were 11-11 on clearance attempts and went 18-8 on draw controls.
Madie Ingman and
Eden Freiberg led the team in points with 8. Ingman made four goals on four shots and assisted four goals. Freiberg scored five and assisted three.
Katie Hendershott tallied seven points on three goals and four assist and
Lauren Shoughro had five points with four goals and one assist.
Melissa Reeves,
Daisy Mele,
Allie McNeill and
Nicole Fraser each scored a goal. Reeves also assisted three and Mele and McNeill each recorded an assist.
Katie Thielen and
Anna Waddoups scored their first goals of the season. Waddoups finished the day with two goals on the stat sheet.
The Griffin defense caused 14 turnovers, and held the Grizzlies to only seven shots, four on goal, and 5-15 on clearances. Kinsey Erickson made two saves and earned the win in her first career start.
Mele and Ingman led the team with three caused turnovers. Shoughro, Reeves and
Audree Erekson each caused two. Hendershott and Fraser each caused one.
Erekson led the team with eight draw control wins and eight ground balls.
Westminster will make a hasty return home to host No. 4 Regis Rangers on Saturday at 1 pm.
