COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The Westminster women's soccer team dropped out of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships Semifinal in a 1-0 loss to UCCS.
"Great effort today," Head Coach
Tony LeBlanc said. "We had a strong game plan and we frustrated them all day."
"Unfortunate to give up a soft goal but I am very proud of our effort."
Westminster's defense proved a difficult challenge for the UCCS offense to break through. The Mountain Lions were called offside four times and committed 12 fouls. The Griffins were outshot 15-7 and allowed seven shots on goal and held the Mountain Lions to a single goal for just the third time this season.
Both teams nearly scored in the first half. UCCS had the first chance in the 27
th minute with a 40-yard shot over goalkeeper
Hillary Weixler. Backpedaling to the goal line, Weixler reached up and was able to push the ball over the crossbar for a corner.
Senior
Skye Jefferies nearly scored in the 40
th minute. Jefferies picked up the ball in the center of midfield and fired a shot from 30 yards. The shot looked destined to slip in at the right post but Mollee Swift made a diving save to keep the game level, 0-0.
The Mountain Lions finally broke through in the 57
th minute with a game winner from Kaitlin Hinkle.
Westminster entered today's game 7
th in the South Central Regional Rankings and will await the NCAA DII Selection Show on Nov. 18 to see if they qualify for the national tournament.
