SALT LAKE CITY, Utah--Westminster women's soccer won its conference opener over in-state opponent Dixie State. A header from a corner kick, in the fifth minute, gave the Griffins the lead and the win.
Westminster were dominant offensively with twice as many attempts, 15-7.
Libby Dearden,
Skye Jefferies,
Sara Weixler and
Aimee Kurfurst led the Griffins with two shots each. Jefferis and Weixler put both of their shots on goal with Weixler scoring the game winning header from a corner kick sent in by
McKell Kellogg.
A shot by
Gabriella Riche was blocked and sent over the goal for an early corner kick. Weixler rose up above her defender at the back post, and met Kellogg's cross and headed it in for the lead and the win.
Goalkeeper
Hillary Weixler and the defense earned the shutout win with strong defending and excellent organization. Westminster only allowed four corner kicks
"I think both center backs, Micah and McKell, were huge today," Head Coach
Tony LeBlanc acknowledged. "They denied entry passes to the target forward and supported each other."
"I knew it would be a good game and we would have to work hard all over the field. It was a total team effort."
Westminster plays their next two matches on the road. They travel to South Dakota and take on Balck Hills State on Friday. On Saturday, the team heads to Denver for a clash with Regis.
