Griffins soar past the Mountain Lions

Krebs and Gonzalez combine for 29 points in win over UCCS

SALT LAKE CITY—Denise Gonzalez scored 15 and Hunter Krebs scored 14 points in the Westminster win over University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.  The Griffins improve to 10-9 overall and 9-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
Tatum Tellin, from UCCS, opened the game with a 3-pointer.  Sydnee Taylor equalized immediately following a three of her own.  The home side went on a 14-4 run to finish the half quarter with a 10-point lead.
 
The visitor's scored the final basket of the first period and started the second quarter making a 7-0 run against the Griffins.  Westminster still held the lead, going into halftime, but it had been cut down by six points, 25-21.
 
The Griffins were 11-30 from the field and 3-13 from 3-point range in the first half.  UCCS was slightly better from beyond the arc, making 3-9, and pretty even from the field, 9-26.
 
Halftime helped the Griffins get refocused.  They finished the second half shooting 40 percent from the field and from beyond the arc.  Gonzalez scored 15 points in the second half after being held scoreless during the first half. 
 
Gonzalez scored nine points in a 15-2 third quarter run that covered nearly seven minutes of game time.  Hunter Krebs made two free throws to end the quarter, giving Westminster a 13-point lead.
 
Gonzalez led the team in both scoring and rebounds.  Gonzalez finished the game with 15 points and seven rebounds.  She and Kaylee Carlsen each tallied four assists.
 
Krebs scored 14 points and was perfect from 3-point range and the free throw line.  She collected three rebounds, had two steals and blocked one shot before being called for her fifth foul with a little over three minutes remaining.
 
Westminster hosts Western State, on Friday, and Colorado Mesa, on Friday, in its final home games of the season.  Tickets are available for purchase online and will also be available at the door prior to the game.  The games will be broadcast on the RMAC network and be available online through live stats.
