Griffins upset by Mountain Lions

UCCS outscored Westminster in the 2nd half by 13 for the win

SALT LAKE CITY—Westminster men's basketball team were upset by University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, 67-61.  The Griffins held a seven-point lead at halftime but were outscored by 13 in the second half.  The Griffins finish the weekend 16-3 overall and 12-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
It was the tale of two halves.  In the first half, Westminster shot 50.0 percent from the field, 83.3 percent from the free throw line, and 22.2 percent from beyond the arc.  The team shot 85.7 percent from the line but dropped to 29.6 percent from the field and 0-8 from 3-point range.
 
The Mountain Lions made a 3-pointer to begin the game and held onto that lead for a little over seven minutes, making three more 3-pointers in that time.  Westminster went on a 24-4 run, taking an 11-point lead with 5:30 remaining in the half.
 
Dayon Goodman picked up his second foul and was subbed out with about 5 minutes remaining.  While Goodman was out, Elijah Ross, of UCCS, scored seven points to finish the half and cut the lead down to seven.
 
Dayon Goodman played 14 minutes and scored 18 points, and Mason Smith collected 10 rebounds.
 
Westminster struggled to put any runs together, going 6-17 from the field and 0-4 beyond the arc, in the first 14 minutes of the second half.  During that time UCCS took a five-point lead and was 11-8 from the field and 3-5 from three.
 
Westminster took the lead back briefly after Goodman scored seven unanswered points in about a minute. Westminster went scoreless for nearly five minutes and UCCS took advantage, outscoring the Griffins 10-2 to finish the game and claim the win, 67-61.
 
Goodman, Sam Orchard and Quincy Bair each scored in double figures.  Goodman led the team with 29 points, Bair scored 11 and Orchard had 10.
 
Smith led the team in rebounds with 12, 11 of those defensive rebounds.  Goodman came second with six, Bair tallied five and Orchard pulled down four.
 
The Griffins final home games are next week against Western State, on Thursday, and Colorado Mesa, on Friday.  Tickets are available to purchase online, in advance, or prior to the game at the door.  The games will be broadcast on the RMAC Network and be available to follow on live stats.
