Griffins score 69 to get past the Hardrockers

Krebs with 21 and Taylor and Carlsen with 14 each, combined for 71 percent of Westminster's points.

RAPID CITY, S.D.--Hunter Krebs, Sydnee Taylor and Kaylee Carlsen each scored double-digit points against the Hardrockers.  Westminster wins the game, 69-65, improving to 8-8 overall and 7-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Westminster out-shot the home side, 59.2 percent to 38.1 percent from the field.  The Griffins left the door open for the Hardrockers, shoot 18.2 percent from beyond the arc and 45.0 percent from the free throw line, going 5-13 in the final minute, but the home side was unable to take advantage.

Westminster held a small lead, one to three points, for most of the first quarter.  South Dakota made a 11-2 run with 2:30 remaining, knocking down three 3-pointers in a row, taking a seven point lead.

The home side continued to lead through the second quarter, leading by as many as 10 points. Westminster went on a 9-2 run in the last three minutes of the half, cutting the Hardrocker's lead down to three, 35-32.

The Griffins went into the fourth quarter trailing by six, as very little changed on the scoreboard through the third quarter.

Sydnee Taylor scored a layup that began a 13-3 run to give the Griffins the final lead of the game, 65-58.  South Dakota was called for its fifth foul, putting Westminster in the bonus, with 3:45 remaining in the game.  The Griffins were 5-14 from the free throw line in the final minute, missing several chances to increase its lead.

Krebs was 9-of-13 from the field and scored 21 points to lead the Griffins.  Kaylee Carlsen and Sydnee Taylor scored double digit points, each of them scoring 14 points.

Denise Gonzalez led the team in rebounds, followed by Taylor with eight and Krebs with five.

"Hunter scored well and defended inside.  Nice to see Sydnee being aggressive to the rim and finishing," Head Coach Shelley Jarrard recounted.  "Kaylee is finiding her rhythm on offense and is solid defensively.  Sicille Williams made some huge play at the end of the first half to keep us within reach."

The Griffins return to the Behnken Fieldhouse against MSU Denver, Friday at 5:30 p.m., and University Colorado Colorado Springs, Saturday 5:30 p.m.  Tickets will be available to purchase online in advance, or at the door prior to the game.  The games will be broadcast on the RMAC network and be available to follow via live stats.
