Griffin Notebook: Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines & Technology

WEEK IN REVIEW--GRIFFINS SWEEP, DEFEATING REGIS AND CHADRON
 
The Griffins continue their unbeaten streak, since the new year began, with a sweep over Regis and Chadron State.

Sam Orchard and Dayon Goodman combined for 47 points, leading the Griffins to victory, 75-67, over Regis (12-4, 6-4 RMAC).
 
The Griffins started the game against Regis with an 8-0 run, getting points from Goodman, Quincy Bair, and Scott Book.  Orchard scored the final nine points of the half for Westminster, sending the team to the locker room with a 10 point lead, 36-26.

Regis chipped away at the Griffin lead but could never get the lead below four points.   Orchard, Goodman and Tanner Newbold went 12-12 from the free throw line in the final two minutes of the game to defeat the Rangers, 75-67.
 
The team was 44.9 percent from the field, made 7-16 from three point range and shot 80.0 percent from the free throw line, 26 of the 30 attempts came in the second half.

The Westminster men's basketball team got off to a slow start against Chadron State (3-14, 1-10 RMAC).  Westminster prevailed in the end, defeating the Eagles 69-51.

The eagles began the game scoring seven unanswered points in the opening four minutes.  The Griffins were 25.0 percent from the field when they scored their first basket of the game.
 
The away side were leading by 10, halfway through the first half, 19-9.  Travis Devasharayee drove a Westminster rally to end the half, draining three 3-pointers and a jumper, with baskets from Bair, Jarred Laws, Orchard and Tanner Newbold.  The half ended, 31-31.

With 11 minutes remaining, the Griffins went on a 12-2 run, taking a double-digit lead for the first time.  The Griffins finished the game, outscoring the Eagles 15-9, posting the final score, 69-51.
 
UPCOMING GAMES

Westminster travels to South Dakota and plays Black Hills State and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology on Thursday and Saturday.  Thursday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 3 p.m.
 
The Griffins are 13-2 overall and 9-2 in the RMAC and are second in the conference standings.  Regis is fourth in the standings and Chadron State is 15th.

GRIFFINS BY THE NUMBERS
 
Goodman leads the team and RMAC in scoring with 411 points, averaging 27.4 points per game.  He is fourth in the conference in field-goal and free throw percentage, and third in rebounding.
 
Goodman leads the Griffins in scoring, rebounding, steals, and blocked shots.  Goodman has pulled down 121 rebounds, has 18 steals and blocked 17 shots.  He is second on the team in assists with 52.
 
Quincy Bair, Orchard and Newbold have each scored more than 100 points.  Bair has scored 148 points and averages 9.9 points per game; Orchard has 165 points and averages 11.0 points per game; Newbold has scored 125 points and averages 8.3 points per game.

Orchard leads the team in assists with 55 and ranks second in the RMAC with a 3.4 assist/turnover ratio.
 
Westminster is second in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 42.5 percent.  Five Griffins are better than 40 percent from 3-point range.  Mason Smith is 3 of 6, Travis Devashrayee is 7 of 15, Goodman is 22 of 46, Laws is 20 of 48, Newbold is 21 of 50 and Orchard is 19 of 43.
 
The Griffins are second in the conference from the free throw line, shooting 77.7 percent.  Newbold is 91.7 percent from the charity stripe, making 22 on 24 attempts.  Goodman has gone to the line 116 times and made 101.  Orchard is 37 of 48, Bair is 37 of 48, and Mason Smith is 25 of 46.
          
SCOUTING BLACK HILLS STATE
 
The Yellow Jackets  are 5th in the RMAC with a 12-5 overall record and 8-4 conference record. They are 10-1 at home and are curretnly on a 4 game win streak.  
 
Four Yellow Jackets have scored more than 100 points this season.  Fraser Malcolm leads the team with 227 points, averaging 14.2 points per game.  Makaleb McInnins has 184 points, averaging 12.3 per game, Dez Stoudamire has scored 170 points, averaging 10.6 per game and Connor O'Hearn has 116 points and is 41.0 percent from beyond the arc.
 
Fraser is also the team lead in rebounds.  He has pulled down 124 total rebounds, 44 offensive boards and 80 defensive boards.  He has blocked 15 shots and has 12 steals and 24 assists.

Antonio Capley has 85 rebounds and 14 blocked shots.  McInnins has 71 rebounds, 20 assists and 10 steals.  Stefan Desnica has 70 rebounds, 14 assists, 15 steals and blocked 12 shots.

SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MINES & TECHNOLOGY
 
The Hardrockers are 13th in the RMAC with a 6-11 overall record and 3-9 conference record. South Daktoa's conference wins came against University of Colorado Colorado Springs, Colorado Christian University and Chadron State College..
 
Logan Elers, Troy Brady, Jake Heather and Brian Orr have each scored more than 150 points.  Elers leads the team and has scored 236 points, averaging 14.0 points per game.  He shoots 56.9 percent from the field.

Brady has scored 199 points and is 47.0 percent from three-point range.  Heath has 167 points and is 43.6 percent from beyond the arc.  Orr has 163 points and is shooting 43.4 percent from the field.  

Wilfred Dickson is 47.0 percent from the field and Jacob Anastasi is 48.5 percent from the field.
 
Elers leads the team in rebounding.  He averages 5.6 boards a game for a total of 96 rebounds, collecting 24 offensive rebounds and 72 defensive rebounds.  Elers 28 assist, nine steals and blocked four shots.

Jack Fiddler has pulled down 61 rebounds and provided 21 assists, leads the team with 10 steals and blocked six shots.

Dickson has tallied 52 rebounds and Orr has contributed 51 rebounds.

ABOUT THE GRIFFINS

Westminster is in its third year as a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at the NCAA Division II level. Last year the Griffins finished fourth in the RMAC standings with a 16-8 overall and 16-6 RMAC record.
 
The team returns 10 players from last season's roster all of whom played at least six games.  Dayon Goodman and Jarred Laws each started all 24 games last year.
 
The Griffins have been picked to finish fourth in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' poll.
