Men's Soccer Gets First Conference Win

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- September 29 -- Westminster men's soccer played RMAC opponent South Dakota School of Mines at Dumke Field on Friday.  Griffins got their first RMAC conference win on Friday beating their opponent 3-1.  The Griffins improve their record to 5-7-0 overall and 1-5-0 in conference play.

Their was plenty of action around the goal for both teams during the first half but neither team could get a goal.  Justin Barkow came close for the Hardrockers after his redirected shot from a free kick bounced off of the right post.  The Griffins out shot the Hardrockers 14 to 7.  Junior Goalkeeper Max Medley made 4 saves for Westminster and Kyle Daledovich had 8 saves for South Dakota.

An offside call in the 62nd minute against South Dakota denied them the first goal of the game as #25 Trenton Magryta curled a shot into the high right corner of the Westminster goal past Max Medley.  Immediately following, in the 63rd minute, freshman Marshall Johnson scored his first goal of the season, smashing a shot from outside the box, hitting the underside of the crossbar in the high left corner.  Only seven minutes later a foul on junior Blaze Nelson near the left corner of the penalty box earned the Griffins a free kick.  Sophomore Cristian Alfaro drove the ball past the keeper in the high left corner.  In the 87th minute junior Hunter Kone stole the ball from the left center back and passed to a wide open Brigham Jackson at the top of the goal box, scoring in the lower left corner.

Only 25 seconds after the Westminster goal, the Hardrockers got a goal back as Justin Barkow passed a ball across the top of the goal box to an open Charles Kieffer for a tap in at the back post.  The Griffins would finish the game defeating the Hardrockers 3-1.

Freshman Amit Hefer helped lead the attack with 4 of his 5 shots on target and 1 assist.  The griffins tallied 23 shots, 12 on goal, and 9 corner kicks.

The backline of senior Hunter Stutz, senior Warne, junior Alec Marshall, and sophomore Preston McIllece played the full 90 minutes.
