GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Competing at the USA Cycling Collegiate Nationals for the first time, Westminster came away with an individual national title as Rob Squire won the gold medal.
The 2017 spring season is the first for the Westminster cycling program.
Squire earned the school's first cycling national title when he broke away from a lead group of six in the final of four laps around the course that went a distance of 106km. Halfway through the race, Squire attacked to form a select breakaway in a bid for the win. He then hit out on the last rise about 1.5 miles from the finish.
"I've always wanted to be apart of collegiate cycling and I couldn't imagine a better start to the program," Squire said. "I'm proud to win the national title and to be a part of the Westminster Cycling Team. With a beginning like this, the sky's the limit for the program."
