Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Heiden’s Late Goal Send Griffins to Postseason

PUEBLO, Colo. – Kira Heiden scored with two seconds to play in regulation and the Westminster women's lacrosse team earned a 14-13 road win at Colorado State – Pueblo on Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Westminster (7-4, 5-3 RMAC) secured the program's first appearance in the RMAC Tournament with the win. The top six teams in the final standings make the tournament and the Griffins can still finish as high as fourth.

Down 8-5 late in the first half, Heiden and Audree Erekson notched goals in the final 1:31 of the half to cut the Griffins deficit to one entering intermission. CSU-Pueblo (4-8, 2-5 RMAC) had three of the first four goals if the second half to lead 11-8 with 21:48 remaining.

Westminster would take the lead back with four straight goals – including two from Heiden – over the ensuing 15 minutes of action. The teams would alternate goals before Pueblo tied the game with 1:41 to play.

Each team committed a turnover on their next possessions to setup the heroics from Heiden. Morgan Bakarich earned an assist on the game-winning goal that was scored from inside the circle with two seconds on the clock.

Heiden finished the day with five goals to lead all scorers. It is the fifth time this season the RMAC's leading goal scorer had scored at least five goals in a game. She also tallied an assist in the win for a team-leading six points. Her 44 goals this season are the most by a Griffin in the NCAA era with at least two games remaining in the season.

Madison Ingman added four goals and an assist in the win while Erekson and Allison Lambert scored two goals apiece. Bakarich finished with a goal and an assists and Kathleen Hendershott had four assists.

The Griffins were outshot in the game 33-23, but they got 19 of their chances on goal. Pueblo had a 16-13 edge in draw controls forced the Griffins into 38 turnovers.

Westminster stayed in the game with solid play from both goalies. Taylor Hekking played the first half with eight saves before Mikala Anderson closed out the win by making six stops in the second half.

The ThunderWolves got three goals and one assist from Leah Neumann.

Westminster will close out the regular season on April 29 when they host Colorado Mesa at Dumke Field. The action will begin at 1 p.m. and tickets are available at WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
