Women Close Season with 67-49 Win against Adams State

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's basketball team brought the 2016-17 season to a close with a 67-49 win over Adams State on Saturday night in the Behnken Field House.
 
With the win, Westminster (11-15, 9-13 RMAC) ends its season in a tie for the ninth position in the final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.
 
The Griffins led the entire game as they scored the first six points on the way to a 21-12 lead after the first quarter. They used a 12-1 run during the second quarter to carry the advantage to 44-26 at intermission. Aubrie Vale scored 15 points in the first half and the team shot 52 percent.
 
Vale's solid night continued into the second half and her three with 5:54 left in the third quarter pushed the Griffins lead to its largest of the game at 21. Adams State (2-23, 1-21 RMAC) was able to get within 10 with 4:51 to play after a 15-4 burst. Westminster would close out the victory by scoring nine of the game's final 10 points.
 
Vale finished the game with 23 points – the sixth 20-point outing of her Westminster career – while also grabbing 11 rebounds for a sixth double-double this season. Playing in her final collegiate game, Vale made 7 of 10 shots, including four 3-pointers, and had three assists and one steal.
 
The Griffins shot 42.9 percent in the game with six makes from beyond the arc. They had a 24-18 edge in points in the paint and scored 12 points from 14 Adams State turnovers.
 
Denise Gonzalez chipped in 16 points and four steals. Seniors Lancee Whetman, Whitni Syrett, and KC Gubler all scored in their final collegiate game.
 
Adams State was held to 28.6 percent from the field and the Grizzlies made only 3 of 18 from three. They forced the Griffins into 16 turnovers and pulled in 17 offensive rebounds.
 
Lejla Hadzialijagic led the Grizzlies with 16 points in 22 minutes off the bench.
