SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's basketball team had its two-game winning streak come to an end with a 63-56 loss to Regis University on Saturday night in the Behnken Field House.
Westminster (10-13, 8-2 RMAC) fell behind 7-0 before going on a 15-4 run to close the first quarter and lead 15-11. The Griffins were able to grow the advantage to seven on a couple of occasions, including after a
Sydnee Taylor jumper with 9:41 to play in the fourth that had them in front 41-34.
Regis (19-6, 14-6) answered with 14 of the game's next 16 points to take a 5-point advantage. After the Griffins pulled even at 49-49 with 3:04 to play, the Rangers countered with a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Neither team generated much offensive efficiency with the Griffins shooting 38.7 percent and Regis shooting 35.1 percent. The key was the Rangers hitting 7 of 11 in the final period which converting 12 of 16 at the foul line.
Denise Gonzalez gave the Griffins an offensive lift off the bench as she finished with 18 points. She scored eight of the team's 10 points in the third quarter with a pair of 3-pointers. The sophomore also added six rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
Taylor added 17 points in defeat for the Griffins.
Aubrie Vale added five points, seven rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
Regis won the rebounding battle 43-35 and they scored 17 points from 15 offensive rebounds. Each team committed 10 turnovers. Westminster had a season-high four blocked shots with two from
Whitni Syrett.
Regis had three players score in double figures with Chante Chruch leading the way with 18.
