Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Eric Stephens

Men's basketball narrowly beat New Mexico Highlands

Free throws prove crucial at the end of the game to beat New Mexico, 75-73

SALT LAKE CITY – The men's basketball team (6-1, 3-1 RMAC) beat New Mexico Highlands (6-4, 1-3 RMAC) by narrow margins.  With 47 seconds remaining, the Cowboys were within three points of the lead.  A pair of free throws by Tanner Newbold and Jarred Laws were enough to see the Griffins finish with a 2-point win, 75-73.

Dayon Goodman and Jarred Laws led the team in scoring through the first half.  Goodman scored 15 and Laws scored nine to lead the Griffins to an eight-point lead, 32-24.  The Griffins held a slight advantage in their field goal shooting, 41.7 percent to New Mexico's 30.4 percent.

New Mexico chipped away at the Westminster lead the entire second half.  The Cowboys were 48.5 percent from the field and made seven 3-pointers in the half.  Free throws became very important in the final two minutes as the Griffins battled to keep their lead over their opponent.  Mason Smith scored five, Sam Orchard made one, and Newbold and Laws each had a pair to finish the game to keep the Cowboys from riding off with a win.

Goodman led the team in scoring with 21 points.  Laws came second on the score sheet with seventeen points.  Quincy Bair was perfect on seven attempts from the charity stripe and had a double-double scoring 13 points and collecting 10 rebounds.

The Griffins play two home games against Fort Lewis and Adams State next week.  Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.  Westminster plays Fort Lewis on Friday and Adams State on Saturday.

The games will be broadcast on the RMAC Network and live stats will be available online.  Tickets can be purchased online in advance or at the door prior to the game.
