Men's basketball sweeps Johnson & Wales in back to back games

Dayon Goodman close to perfect in win over the Wildcats

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 RMAC) played Johnson & Wales-Denver (0-4) for the second time in less than 24 hours.  Although the result was similar with a Griffin win, the Wildcats contested the game more closely than the first time.

The Wildcats started the game with two 3-pointers and jumped to an early lead.  It took the Griffins a few minutes to get things rolling but they eventually took the lead after scoring 10 straight points.  The Griffins surrendered the lead back to the Wildcats only once, for a brief moment, before building a lead of eight points to end the first half, 36-28.

Dayon Goodman was perfect from the field and the line in the first half, scoring 13 points and collecting three defensive rebounds.  Mason Smith put up six points and Jarred laws had three assists in the first half.  The team shot 60.9 percent field  and 88.9 percent from the line.

The Griffins continued to control the game, keeping their lead between 10 and 19 points throughout most of the second half.  With 2:18 left in the game the Wildcats were able to get the lead below 10 points for close to two minutes.  Goodman scored the final points of the game and the Griffins won 76-66.

Goodman got his first double-double with 10 rebounds and 30 points, shooting 11 of 12 from the field and perfect from the free throw line on eight attempts.  Same Orchard and Tanner Newbold each had nine points.  Orchard, Jarred Laws, and Mason Smith each had four assists.

The Griffins return to action on Friday, November 25, hosting the Westminster Thanksgiving Invitational.  Both Dixie State and Westminster will play against Dickinson State and Seattle Pacific.  The Griffins will play Dickinson State on November 25 and Seattle Pacific on November 26.  Both games are scheduled for tip off at 7:30 p.m. MST in the Behnken Field House.  Tickets can be purchased online or at the door the prior to the game.  Live video feed will be available along with live stats.
