Griffin Notebook: at Colorado Mesa and South Dakota Mines

2017 SCHEDULE

Westminster Travels to MSU Denver and CCU

Men's soccer returns to Dumke field this week and continue RMAC competition against MSU Denver on Friday at 3:00 PM and Colorado Christian on Sunday at 2:30 PM.  Tickets can be purchased in advanced online or the day of the game at the gate.  A live feed will be broadcast on the RMAC Network, as well as a play-by-play on through live stats.

The Week In Review - Comebacks

The Griffins wish to forget Wednesday's performance at Colorado Mesa.  The Mavericks shut the Griffins out and scored six to win 6-0.  The match started off poorly for Westminster, conceding two goals early on in the first three minutes of the match.  Mavericks controlled the entire game and scored four more goals in the second half as they cruised to victory over the Griffins.

The Griffins traveled to Rapid City, S.D., for their match against South Dakota School of Mines.  A flurry of yellows in the first half eventually saw senior center back Matt Warne sent off for his second yellow.  The half would end scoreless.  SD Mines scored first on a penalty kick early in the second half only to concede a penalty kick of their own less than one minute later.  Alex Marshall converted the penalty kick to level the match.  The match was pretty even from there and it was difficult to tell Westminster was down a man.  The griffins allowed zero shots in overtime and scored off of a Jonnathon Rodriquez corner kick to Marshall Johnson for the win.

Men's Soccer

The 2017 season is the 34th season of competition for the Westminster men's soccer program. The Griffins went 4-13 last season, its second competing in the RMAC and against an NCAA Division II schedule.  The Griffins are competing in their third season of RMAC play since beginning the NCAA II provisional membership process.

Scouting the Opponents

MSU Denver has an overall record of 7-7 and a conference record of 4-3.  They are currently on a 3 game win streak having defeated Adams State 1-0, UCCS 2-0, and CSU-Pueblo 3-0.  Over half of the Roadrunner's goals have come from Nils Runnberg with six, Yannick Schad with four, and Dylan Wood with four.  They have only been shutout in two matches this season.

Colorado Christian University comes into the week with a 1-10-3 overall record and a 1-7-2 conference record.  Last week the Trailblazers tied CSU-Pueblo 1-1 and lost to UCCS 2-1.  CCU has been out scored 34 to 12, giving up almost twice as many goals in the second half.

Looking Ahead

Westminster will finish the 2017 season on the road, in a rematch of this week's games, at MSU Denver on Friday, October 27, and Colorado Christian on Sunday, October 29.  The games will be broadcast on the RMAC Network and available to follow on live stats.
