Griffins Dominate Second Half in Exhibition Win

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's soccer team impressed in its second exhibition game of the season as they came away with a 5-1 win over former Frontier Conference rival Carroll on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field.

Westminster scored four times in the second half to turn a 1-1 halftime tie into an easy victory. They had a 13-7 edge in shots during the game and were able to put 10 of those chances on goal. Carroll (2-2) finished with just three shots on frame.

Matthew Warne scored the Griffins' opening goal when he found a loose ball in the box and pushed it home. The ball was played into the area on a free kick by Christian Alfaro.

After Carroll found an equalizer in the 30th minute, Connor Thompson tallied the eventual game-winner when he finished a cross by Jonnathan Rodriguez from just inside the penalty area.

Hunter Stutz found the end or a corner kick service by Andrew Clayton in the 59th minute that made it 3-1. The lead reached 4-1 on a Hunter Kone penalty kick and then Blaze Nelson capped the day with a goal from 40-yards away in the 82nd minute.

Max Medley secured the win on goal with a pair of saves in his 66 minutes. Sean Speirs played the final 24 minutes in goal for the Griffins.

Westminster will return to action on Thursday when they host Salt Lake Community College. The action from Dumke Field will begin at 3 p.m. with tickets available at WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
