2015–2016 #GriffinsReview – Winter Sports

The 2015-16 #GriffinsReview continues with a look back at the winter sports season. Capped with a National Championship from the women's snowboard team, the winter saw Westminster teams excel on the court, track, and mountain.

ALPINE SKI
The alpine ski season began with a bang as the Westminster men won the Slalom race at the season opening Utah Invitational. It was the first event win by a Westminster team since joining the Rocky Mountain Ski Association in 2010. The Griffin men finished the year third in the final alpine standings while the women placed fifth. Overall the two teams scored enough points for a fourth-place finish in the RMISA final alpine standings.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Griffins returned to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for the first time since the 1978-79 season. The 40th season of Westminster hoops saw the team finish 14-12 overall and finish ninth in the RMAC with a 10-12 mark in league games. Zerrion Payton was named to the All-RMAC Second Team after leading the Griffins in points, rebounds, assists and steals. Casey Evans was also honored by the conference as the junior was selected as First Team RMAC All-Academic.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The first season in the RMAC saw the women's basketball team complete a 12-14 season with the Griffins finishing 10th in the conference with a 9-13 record. The team closed the year strong by winning six of its final nine games. Aubrie Vale was the conference player of the week during the final week of the regular season and she tied a conference record by making 6 of 6 from beyond the arc against Chadron State on January 22. Mika Pinner and Lancee Whetman were selected to the RMAC Academic Honor Roll.

SNOWBOARD
The Westminster women's snowboard team continued its dominance of the USCSA by winning the USCSA National Championship for the second straight year and seventh time in the eight-year history of the program. Emma Crosby took home the individual national title to successfully defend her crown from the year before. The Griffin men finished second for the seventh time in program history while Owen Golden placed third in his quest to repeat as the individual champion.

INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
Competing in the tough RMAC for the first time, the Westminster track & field teams showed signs of its growth during the season. The Griffin men finished ninth at the RMAC Indoor Championships with the women placing 13th. Joe Cremer led the men with his seventh-place finish in the 800 Meters at the Championships. During the indoor season, Westminster set a total of 12 school records.
