SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Westminster women's basketball completed a weekend sweep of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play for the first time in school history with a 66-60 win at Western New Mexico on Saturday night.
Westminster (9-12, 6-11 RMAC) led 32-28 at halftime before erupting for a 21-10 third quarter. They scored 10 of the final 12 points of the quarter and then pushed the lead to 17 on the first possession on the fourth quarter.
Western New Mexico (7-15, 5-12) then mounted a furious rally by outscoring the Griffins 16-4 over the next seven minutes to cut the lead to 59-54 with 2:46 remaining.
Aubrie Vale hit a three on the next Griffins possession to get the lead back to eight and secure the road victory.
Mika Pinner would lead the Griffins in scoring with 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting. The senior had a pair of 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds with three blocked shots. Vale added 13 points and five assists in the win.
The Griffins shot 40.8 percent from the field with five made threes. They went 21 of 28 at the foul line with a 40-26 edge on the boards. They scored 14 points from 12 offensive rebounds while holding the Mustangs to 1 of 11 from beyond the arc.
Deandra Williams led WNMU with 17 points and nine rebounds. Desiree Smith had 14 points and eight assists.
Westminster will remain on the road next weekend with a pair of games in South Dakota. The trip begins on Friday at South Dakota Mines.
