Weekend Ends with Loss to Skyhawks

DURANGO, Colo. – The Westminster women's basketball team ended its weekend trip with a 78-66 loss at Fort Lewis on Saturday evening at Whalen Gymnasium.
 
Westminster has now alternated wins and losses in its past six games and falls to 5-5 overall. They are 3-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
 
The Griffins had the 8-6 lead midway through the opening quarter before Fort Lewis (8-4, 4-2 RMAC) began a 19-4 run with 14 straight points. The Skyhawks held the Griffins to 2 of 15 shooting with five turnovers during the decisive 10:38 span. The deficit remained in double figures the rest of the night as the Griffins only got within 11 with 2:11 remaining in the fourth quarter.
 
It was a tough shooting night for the Griffins as they hit just 36.6 percent from the field. They were 8 of 24 from beyond the arc. Fort Lewis shot 50.0 percent on the night and had a 42-37 edge on the boards.
 
Denise Gonzalez led the Westminster effort with 14 points to reach double figures for the third time in the past four games. She hit a pair of threes and had four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
 
The Griffins committed a season-low eight turnovers with 13 assists, but they allowed 28 points in the paint and made just 6 of 11 at the foul line.
 
Sicilee Williams added 13 points in defeat while Aubrie Vale scored 10. Vale tied with Sydnee Taylor for the team lead in rebounds with five. She also matched Lancee Whetman for the team lead with three assists.
 
Briana Clah scored 34 points to lead the Skyhawks. That is the second-most point an opposing player has ever scored against the Griffins.
 
Westminster will now take 12 days off before facing Colorado School of Mines on December 30 in Golden, Colo. That game will begin at 1 p.m. MST and be broadcast live on the RMAC Network.
