SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's soccer team allowed a goal in the 89th minute to drop a 1-0 decision to Hope International in the season opener at Dumke Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the game scoreless nearing the end of regulation, Hope International (2-1) made a run down the right sideline. Irvin Guadarrama carried the ball into the penalty area where he took a tough angle shot from near the end line. The ball took a deflection from a Griffin defender and went into the net for the winner.
Westminster (0-1) only got two shots off in the game as they drop a season opener for this first time since 2011.
Warren Cook had one of the shots with
Josh Jackson getting the other and the only attempt on frame.
HIU got nine shots away and they put five on goal. Four of those were saved by
Sean Lyne who took the defeat.
The Griffins will be back in action on Sunday at noon when they face Bellevue at Dumke Field.
