SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team wrapped up their exhibition season with a tough 2-1 loss in overtime to Idaho State on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Idaho State (1-3), a NCAA Division I member of the Big Sky Conference, got two goals from Maria Sanchez to earn their first win of the season. Sanchez scored her first goal in the 21st minute when she scored on a breakaway after a through ball played by Nikolina Musto.
After only getting two shots off in the first half, Westminster created eight attempts in the second half. They were able to get three shots on goal in the period, including an equalizing goal from
Madison Roemer in the 83rd minute. After
Rylei North played the ball to Roemer at the top of the penalty area, the junior created some space and fired a shot inside the near post.
ISU would find the winner early into the overtime period when Musto played another through ball for Sanchez that slid under a Westminster defender. Sanchez would then take two touches and put her shot in the goal for the win in the 93rd minute.
The Griffins finished the match with 10 shots, including three apiece from Roemer and
Heidi Lorschider. North added two attempts.
Abi Yanke played the first half in goal for the Griffins and allowed one goal with one save.
Breanna Empey made six saves in the second half and overtime.
Westminster will now move on to the start of the regular season when they travel to Hawaii for three games next week. They begin the trip against Hawaii Pacific on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT.
