Griffins Survive Rally; Earn 10th Win of Season

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Westminster women's soccer team held off a late rally from Colorado Mesa and secured a 3-2 win at Walker Field in the season finale on Sunday afternoon.

Westminster took a 3-0 lead and then held on late to finish the season at 10-6-1. They win 10 games in a season for the sixth straight year. The Griffins finished sixth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with 16 points during their inaugural season in the league. That would have qualified them for the conference tournament if they were eligible.

They took the lead on Sunday in the 16th minute when Heidi Lorschider put one top shelf from just inside the penalty area. Madison Roemer played the ball to earn an assist on the goal. That lead would remain into the 62nd minute when Rylei North put away her 32nd career goal on a feed from Tiana Cerciello.

It appeared the Griffins would cruise to a win when North set-up Danielle Fjeldsted for her first career goal in the 86th minute.

The home side would strike in the 89th minute with a goal from Brooklyn Meinke. The Mavericks then made it interesting when Marie Dreher finished a cross by Mikayla Ellsworth that had the lead down to 3-2 with 20 seconds remaining. That would be the final attempt of the game and the Griffins escaped with a victory.

Each team was credited with nine shots on the afternoon. The Griffins got six of their chances on goal, including three from North. CMU finished the game holding a slim 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Abi Yanke became the Westminster all-time leader in wins by earning her 31st by making three saves on Sunday.
