Griffins Snap Skid with 3-0 Win at Soka

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – The Westminster men's soccer team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 3-0 win over Soka (Calif.) on Sunday afternoon.

After playing through a scoreless first half, Westminster (6-2-1) scored all three of its goals during a 10 minutes stretch to finish the weekend's trip to Calif. with a victory.

Ruben Soriano opened the scoring in the 56th minute when he took a through ball from Matthew Warne and put a shot inside the far post for his first goal of the season. It also gave Warne his first assist of the year and snapped a scoreless streak by the Griffins of 240 minutes.

Just over five minutes later the Griffins would added a second goal from a free kick. Manuel Duenas sent the kick into the penalty area where Jace Schaecher redirected the ball past the Soka (2-1) keeper for the two-goal lead. It was the first goal of the year for Schaecher.

Duenas would add his second assist of the game and fourth of the season in the 66th minute when he chipped a pass over the Soka defenders to the foot of Jonnathan Rodriguez. After a touch to collect possession, Rodriguez slid a shot on the ground to the far post to give the Griffins a 3-0 lead on his first goal of the year.

Soka finished the afternoon holding a 17-13 edge in shots with the Griffins getting seven shots on goal to just six from the home squad. Schaecher, Rodriguez, and Andrew Clayton led all Griffins with two shot attempts with Schaecher getting both of his attempts on goal.

Logan Butzier earned the victory and notched his third shutout of the season with six saves. He is now 4-0 on the year with a 0.25 goals-against-average.

Westminster will spend another week on the road as they travel east for three games. They begin the trip on Friday in Fremont, Neb. for a noon MT contest against Midland (Neb.).
