SALT LAKE CITY – The 16th-ranked Westminster women's soccer team opened Frontier Conference action with a 3-0 win over great Falls (Mont.) on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Westminster (10-1-2, 1-0 Frontier) took the early lead when
Lexi Tucker hit a shot off the cross bar and into the goal in the fifth minute of action.
Nicole Carter played the ball to Tucker at the top of the penalty area where she stepped into the shot to tally her seventh goal of the season.
The score would remain 1-0 until the 75th minute when
Heidi Lorschider played a ball to a streaking
Rylei North. With the Great Falls (4-4-2, 0-2) keeper charging, North chipped the ball over her as she dove and got just enough of it to have it roll into the net for her ninth goal of the year.
The Griffins would add a third goal in the final minute from a corner kick. Carter played the ball into the area where
Megan Molumby headed it down to the feet of
Madison Roemer. The sophomore gathered a shot to the far post for her fourth goal of the season and the third-latest regulation goal in team history.
Westminster had possession of the action for much of the afternoon as they finished with an 18-4 edge in shot attempts. The Griffins were able to record 13 of those attempts on goal and they also took nine corner kicks while giving up just four.
Abi Yanke made two saves in goal for the Griffins to record her 10th win and seventh shutout of the season.
The Griffins will take next week off before returning to action on Oct. 11 when they travel to Billings, Mont. to face Rocky Mountain (Mont.).
