Westminster Splits Two Matches on First Day in Spokane

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPOKANE, Wash. – The Westminster women's volleyball team opened the 2014 season by splitting a pair of matches at the Sports Travel Northwest Invitational on Thursday. Westminster opened the day by sweeping Walla Walla (Wash.) 25-19, 25-10, 25-20. They then dropped a three-set match to No. 23 Eastern Oregon in the night cap by scores of 25-21, 25-11, 25-25-20.
 
The Griffins won their season-opening match for the fifth consecutive year with the sweep of Walla Walla. This was the first meeting all-time between the two programs. No stats were available from the match.
 
Against Eastern Oregon, the Griffins played the nation's 23rd-ranked team close in the first set before seeing the Mountaineers win the final two sets.
 
Alexis Aalona finished the EOU match with a team-high eight kills with Jessica Chellsen adding seven kills. The Griffins had 27 kills as a team and finished the match hitting .092. EOU totaled 37 kills and hit .235 despite seven kills from the Griffins.
 
Westminster will return to the courts in Spokane on Friday for another two matches. They begin the day at 3 p.m. MT against Evergreen (Wash.) before facing Simpson (Calif.) at 7 p.m.
