SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team completed a season sweep of Carroll (Mont.) with a 2-1 win at Dumke Field on Sunday afternoon. In the win, Westminster's
Rylei North set the school record by scoring her 21st career goal.
Neither team was able to establish much in a first half that only saw four shots between the two teams and finished without any goals. That changed early in the second half when Carroll (11-3-3, 2-2-1 Frontier) found the game's first goal less than four minutes into the new period. Lexi Pyette carried the ball to the right of the penalty area and then put a shot just over the reach of the Griffin keeper,
Abi Yanke, for her second goal of the season.
Westminster (12-3-2, 3-2) would get the equalizer just 47 seconds later on the record-setting goal from North.
Jayne Christensen ran the ball down at the end line and sent a cross into the penalty area. North was a race to the ball and redirected it just inside the near post for her 11th goal of the season.
The game remained level at 1-1 until the 82nd minute when
Lexi Tucker scored on a blast from 35 yards out for the game-winner. Tucker came onto the ball and sent her shot to the far post. It was off the hand of the Carroll keeper and directed into the goal for the eighth of the season and third winner.
Westminster finished the game with a 9-5 edge in shot attempts and they were able to get five shots on goal. The Griffins also took eight corner kicks and each team was called for six fouls.
North entered the game with 20 goals in her career and tied with Heather Hillam for the Westminster all-time lead. She also moves to third all-time in points with 44, one shy of the school record.
Yanke finished the afternoon with two saves as she tied a school record her 12th win of the season.
Westminster will conclude the regular season on Nov. 2 when they host Rocky Mountain (Mont.) for a Senior Day contest at 11 a.m. MT at Dumke Field.
