Volleyball Travels to Great Falls and Northern

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's volleyball team has two road matches on the slate this weekend. They begin with a Friday game at Great Falls (Mont.) at 7 p.m. and then a visit to Montana State-Northern on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Live stats will be available for both matches during the weekend trip to Montana. Saturday's match will also be streamed live courtesy of MSU-Northern. Links for all of the live features can be found in the calendar section of WestminsterGriffins.com.

GRIFFIN NOTEBOOK
Westminster takes to the road at 7-9 on the season and 1-2 in the Frontier Conference. They are coming off consecutive conference losses last week after dropping five-set decisions at Carroll (Mont.) and at home to Montana Tech. The Griffins have gone 1-3 in road matches this season and 7-4 against non-ranked opponents.

With a .172 hitting efficiency the Griffins sit fourth in the Frontier Conference and they sit third by averaging 11.6 kills per set. They rank 36th in the NAIA with 766 total kills and 32nd with 704 total assists. Westminster averages 1.23 service aces per set to place seventh in the nine team league.

The Griffins are holding the opposition to a .166 hitting efficiency and allowing 11.7 kills per set. Westminster is second in the Frontier in blocks at 2.12 per set. That ranks 31st in the NAIA and the 140 total blocks is 19th in the country. The Griffins also average 15.1 digs per set with a total of 995 to sit 49th nationally.

AGAINST THE OPPOSITION
Westminster holds a 14-10 lead in all-time meetings with Great Falls but they have dropped three straight in the series. Westminster is 5-4 at Great Falls with the last road win coming in 2011. The current three-game losing skid follows a span of four straight win by the Griffins.

The Griffins have 17 wins in 20 all-time meetings with MSU-Northern. The team split the two meetings last season with each winning at home. The win by Northern snapped the Griffins 17-match winning streak in the series. Westminster is 7-2 all-time in Havre.

AALONA ON THE ATTACK
Outside hitter Alexis Aalona is averaging 2.79 kills per set to rank sixth in the Frontier Conference. She has been the team leader in kills in 11 matches and eight times reached double figures in kills. Aalona matched her career high with 23 kills in the loss to Montana Tech last Saturday.

Aalona also leads the team with seven double-doubles and is second on the team with 171 digs. She has been in double figures in digs in nine matches. The junior is tied for second on the team with 39 blocks and is averaging 0.59 blocks per set.

ALL ABOUT ATKINSON
Senior All-American candidate Emily Atkinson has recorded 503 assists so far this season and she is second in the Frontier with an average of 7.62 assists per set. In the match against Cornerstone (Mich.), Atkinson became the Westminster career leader in assists as she notched her 2,810th career assist. She enters this weekend with 3,239 career helpers.

Atkinson ranks third on the team with 127 digs and she has posted four double-doubles. She has been in double figures in digs during four matches, including a season-high 15 at Montana Western.

DIGGING WITH KORDAKIS
Senor libero Kyndall Kordakis has notched 329 digs on the season and is averaging 4.98 per set to rank second in the Frontier and 34th in the NAIA. She has been the team leader in digs in all 16 matches the team has played and 10 times she has reached 20 digs.

Kordakis now has 1,629 digs in her Westminster career and she ranks second in school history on that category. Bree Riet holds the all-time lead with 1,712 digs which means Kordakis needs to just 84 digs to become the all-time leader. At her current average, Kordakis will break the record against at home on Oct. 11 against Rocky Mountain (Mont.).

REJECTED BY RAMIREZ
Junior Mayra Ramirez has recorded 69 blocks this season and she is 10th in the NAIA with that total. She is averaging 1.06 blocks per set to place 33rd in the country while leading the team in blocks during 12 matches. Ramirez has totaled at least five blocks in seven of the matches played this season.

Ramirez has also been efficient on the offensive end. She leads the squad with a .249 hitting efficiency while averaging 1.94 kills per set. Ramirez was named to the Julie Martin Memorial Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 1.86 kills and 0.86 blocks per set during the four matches. She hit .231 during the weekend and also picked up six digs.

NORMAN NEARING 150
Head Coach Kim Norman is in her 10th season as the head coach of the women's volleyball team at Westminster in 2013. During that time, Norman has guided the Griffins to a 142-137 overall record and a .509 winning percentage. The team has four winning seasons and has gone 76-54 (.585) in Frontier Conference play while winning regular season titles in 2005 and 2006.

FRONTIER PRESEASON COACHES' POLL
The Griffins have been picked to finish fifth in the Frontier Conference this season according to a poll of the league's coaches. Carroll (Mont.) was selected as the favorite to win the 2013 title after receiving five first-place votes and 60 points. Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) was picked second with 57 points and three first-place votes. Rocky Mountain (Mont.) took one first-place vote to earn 48 points to be selected third with Montana State-Northern coming in fourth with 41 points. Great Falls (Mont.), Montana Tech and Montana Western were selected sixth, seventh and eight respectively. Dickinson State (N.D.) was selected ninth.
