Volleyball Falls to Tech in Five

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's volleyball team dropped a five-set match to Montana Tech on Saturday afternoon in the Behnken Field House.

Westminster drops to 7-9 on the season and 1-2 in Frontier Conference play with the 25-18, 18-25, 26-28, 25-22, 11-15 loss. Montana Tech improves to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in the league with the victory.

The Griffins came out strong and hit .387 in the opening set to take the early lead. The Griffins got five kills from Alexis Aalona in the set and also picked up three blocks. The tide turned in set number two as Westminster hit negative-.156 with 14 hitting errors and only seven kills.

The third set was a back-and-forth affair that featured nine ties and five lead changes. Each team had multiple chances at set point before Montana Tech took the win. The Griffins hit .208 in the frame but they couldn't overcome the 21 kills effort of the visitors. Westminster came back to win the fourth set with a .222 hitting effort and 18 kills. Aalona notched eight kills in the set while Katie Vance chipped in four.

Set number five saw both teams hold the lead and featured three ties and two lead changes before Tech would hold on for the 15-11 win. The visitors hit .278 in the deciding set and held Westminster to only .167.

Aalona finished the afternoon with 23 kills to match her career high. She hit .268 for the match while also picking up 15 digs and four blocks. It was her team-leading seventh double-double of the season.

Mayra Ramirez notched nine kills and six blocks for the Griffins. Jovana Sisovic added eight kills. Kyndall Kordakis recorded 24 digs with Emily Atkinson going for 43 assists.

Korey Krumm led Montana Tech with 13 kills while hitting .355. Jordan Diaz added 12 kills and Annie Smoot finished with 10. Kimmy Kavran posted 32 digs from her libero position.

Westminster will look to snap this two-game losing streak when they travel to Great Falls on Friday. The action from the McLaughlin Center will begin at 7 p.m.
