Griffins Shake Off Slow Start to Win at Western

Box Score DILLON, Mont. – The Westminster College women's volleyball team overcame a slow start for a four-set win over Montana Western at Straugh Gymnasium on Friday night in the Frontier Conference opener for both teams.

Westminster evens their overall record at 7-7 on the season with the 18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-19 victory. They move to 1-0 in league play. Montana Western drops to 7-10 and 0-1.

It was a tough first set for the Griffins as they never got into an offensive flow. They finished the set with 10 kills and 10 hitting errors in the loss. Westminster would see things improve in the second set as they racked up 14 kills and hit .113 in the frame. After picking up 11 kills in the third set, the Griffins finished the match with 16 kills and hit .229 in the final set.

The Griffins would finish with a 51-45 advantage in kills for the match and they also posted a season-high 10 service aces. They popped up 91 digs and had seven blocks in holding Western to .122 hitting for the match.

Westminster got a big offensive night from the trio of Alyse Horton, Jovana Sisovic, and Mayra Ramirez. The three combined for 35 of the team's 51 kills with Horton setting a career high with 12 kills. Sisovic also had 12 kills while hitting .281 and Ramirez posted 11 kills with no errors to hit .458. Sisovic added a team-high five blocks with four more coming from Ramirez.

Kyndall Kordakis led three Griffins in double figures in digs with her 23. Alexis Aalona added 17 digs and Emily Atkinson posted a double-double with 27 assists and 15 digs. Cassandra Fenton had a career-high five service aces which is tied for the third most in school history.

Emily Erickson led Western with 13 kills while adding 14 digs. Breanne Kelley added 11 kills and 14 digs with Kendra Mendicino notching 23 digs.

Westminster will return to action on Sept. 19 when they travel to Helena, Mont. to face Carroll (Mont.). That match will begin at 7 p.m. in the Carroll P.E. Center.
