Box Score 3 IRVINE, Calif. – The Westminster College women's volleyball team played three tough matches against top-10 ranked teams on Saturday at the Asics/Wyndham Labor Day Classic. Westminster came up short in all three matches to end the weekend at 3-6 on the season.
The Griffins began the day with a tightly contested match that went five sets with No. 9 The Master's (Calif.). After dropping the first two sets 31-29 and 25-17, Westminster came back to take the next two frames 25-14 and 27-25. The rally would fall short as Master's took the deciding set 15-5. The match featured 34 ties and 12 lead changes with 17 tied coming in set one and another 14 ties in set four.
Alexis Aalona overcame a slow start to lead all players in the match with 19 kills while hitting .304. She also added 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
Mayra Ramirez contributed eight kills and eight blocks with
Katie Vance adding nine kills.
The second match of the day for the Griffins saw them suffer a 26-24, 25-19, 25-18 sweep at the hands of No. 4 Biola (Calif.). While it was the first 3-0 loss of the season for the Griffins, they hung in all three sets and forced 22 ties in the match.
Aalona finished the match with nine kills to lead the Griffins. Ramirez and
Alyse Horton added seven kills apiece with Horton hitting .357 for the match and grabbing nine digs.
Kyndall Kordakis picked up her fourth 20-dig match of the season with 21 digs versus the Eagles.
It would take four sets for top-ranked and defending national champion Concordia (Calif.) to knock off the Griffins. The host Eagles won by scores of 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 25-17 to remain perfect on the season.
Aalona again led the way with 12 kills and she picked up 10 digs for her third double-double of the weekend.
Kenzie Mitchell posted 10 kills while Ramirez went for eight kills and six blocks. Kordakis added 22 digs in the match to give her 108 for the weekend.
Next week the Griffins will travel to Livonia, Mich. to take part in the Julie Martin Memorial Classic hosted by Madonna (Mich.). Westminster opens the weekend with matches against Roosevelt (Ill.) and Davenport (Mich.) on September 6.
