SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's volleyball team split two matches at the Westminster Tournament of Champions on Saturday to finish in second place in the event.
Westminster (3-1) began the day with a five-set win over Cornerstone (Mich.) by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 15-25, 25-16, 16-14. Then in the final match of the night, the Griffins fell in four sets to Dixie State (Utah), 14-25, 25-21, 24-26, 22-25.
Alexis Aalona posted her first 20-kill performance of the season against Cornerstone. The junior recorded 21 kills while hitting .312 and also adding 12 digs and three blocks. Kenzie Mitchell chipped in 13 kills and hit .306 with Mayra Ramirez posting 10 kills.
Emily Atkinson notched 48 assists and 11 digs in the match. During the second set, Atkinson became the Westminster all-time leader in assists as she picked up career assist number 2,810.
The night cap saw Aalona post another 14 kills, but she had to work for them and hit a season0low .087. She pick up 12 digs for her third double-double of the weekend. Jovana Sisovic added a spark off the bench picking up 11 kills while hitting .450.
With the win, Dixie State claimed the Tournament of Champions title and gave the Griffins a second-place result. Cornerstone (2-2) finished in third followed by Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and Hope International (Calif.).
Westminster will now hit the road for the team's next 11 matches. The stretch begins with a trip to Irvine, Calif. for the Asics/Wyndham Hotel Labor Day Invitational hosted by Concordia (Calif.). The Griffins will play five matches in the two days, including facing defending national champions Concordia on August 31.
