Griffins Strike before the Lightning

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team used a goal from Manuel Duenas in the 67th minute to help them to a 2-1 win over The Master's (Calif.) on Saturday afternoon at Dumke Field.

The game would be called for lightning with 1:52 remaining on the second half clock and Westminster (2-0) holding a 2-1 advantage.

The Griffins got on the board in the game's fourth minute as Ryan Smith notched his second goal of the season from a pass by Liam Harry. The Master's (1-1) would level the match at 1-1 when Kevin Scheunemann scored from four yards out from Zach Klindworth.

The game would remain level until Duenas would score his second career goal and first game-winner in the 67th minute. Omar Jaimes was credited with an assist on the deciding strike.

Lightning struck with just less than two minutes remaining and continued in the area for the next hour. It also rained heavily during that time which led to the officials calling the game.

Westminster had a 13-5 edge in shots on the afternoon with four of those attempts on goal. The took five corner kicks and suffered 16 fouls. Smith led all Griffins with three shot attempts with Jaimes and Anthony Alcox taking two shots apiece.

The game was physical throughout with a total of 28 fouls whistled and seven yellow cards handed out.

Logan Butzier moved to 2-0 on the season with one save.

The Griffins remain at home next weekend as they play three times over Labor Day Weekend. The first of those contests comes on Friday as they welcome Bellevue (Neb.) to Dumke for a 4 p.m. start.
