Box Score

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's soccer team opened the 2013 season with an impressive 6-0 win over Jamestown (N.D.) on Tuesday evening at Dumke Field.

Westminster (1-0) used three goals in each half to match the school record for goals scored in a home game with six that was set in last season's season opener. The scoring started in the 19th minute when Madison Roemer gathered possession at the top of the box and then turned and put a shot in the net for the freshman's first career goal.

Freshman scoring seemed to be a theme of the evening as the Griffins also got goals from first-year players Abigail Black and Nikaila Nicholls in the 56th and 88th minutes respectively. Black scored hers on a shot that was taken from 35 yards out and went just over the keepers head. Nicholls then came back with one that bounced off the far post and in from 30 yards away.

It was senior Jessica Harris that scored two goals in the contest, both from corner kicks by Lexi Tucker. The first came in the 37th minute as she tapped in a loose ball in the box. She would then add her second in the 47th minute with a header from the top of the six.

Fellow senior Brianna Wilson added her goal in the 43rd minute after carrying the ball for 25 yards and then blasting a shot from 30 yards out.

The Griffins have now posted 6-0 shutouts to open the season in consecutive seasons. They lost four top offensive threats from 2012 and were looking for the newcomers to help fill the void. They finished the evening with a 20-3 edge in shots taken and put nine of those 20 shots on frame. They also took seven corner kicks that resulted in two goals.

Jamestown (0-1) failed to attempt a shot until the 54th minute and they weren't able to get any of their three shots on goal. Jamie Wilkinson earned the victory and her third career shutout without making any saves.

Westminster will continue this two-game home stand to start the season on Saturday when they host The Master's (Calif.) at Dumke Field. The action will begin at noon between the Griffins and Mustangs.
