Griffins Open with Jamestown and The Master’s

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team will open the 2013 season with a pair of home games at Dumke Field this week. The season opener comes on Tuesday as Jamestown (N.D.) visits for a 1 p.m. start. On Saturday, The Master's (Calif.) comes to town to face the Griffins at 2:30 p.m.

Both games will have live stats and be streamed live on Griffins TV. Links to the live features can be found in the calendar section of WestminsterGriffins.com.

Westminster returns 11 players from a 2012 squad that finished 10-6-2 overall. Among that group is last season's leading scorer, Ryan Smith. He finished 2012 with nine goals and three assists for a team-best 21 points. In 18 games played, Smith took 42 shots with 19 on goal and he scored five game-winning goals.

Wilson Larson and Manuel Duenas are also back after tying Smith for the team lead with three assists. Larson appeared in just seven games due to injury, but still was fifth on the team with 10 points. Duenas attempted 15 shots with seven on goal a season ago.

The back line will be anchored by returners Bryan Rucklos, Lucas Matelich and Aaron Rees. Those three combined for 3,941 minutes played at defense last season with Rucklos playing a team-high 1,540 minutes. Three newcomers look to see time in goal with Keaton Gallegos, Sean Lyne and Logan Butzier all looking to contribute at keeper.
