Offense Leads Griffins to Sweep of Western

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's volleyball team evened up its Frontier Conference record with a 3-0 sweep of Montana Western on Saturday afternoon in the Behnken Field House.

Westminster moves to 9-10 overall on the season and 3-3 in Frontier play with the 25-16, 25-16, 25-23 victory. They drop Montana Western to 7-15 overall and 0-6 in the league.

After getting off to sluggish start, the Griffins came back to hit .290 in the opening set to earn the win. Mayra Ramirez notched five kills in the set and helped the team to a 14-9 edge in kills during the frame. There were 10 ties and five lead changes early in the first frame before the Griffins pulled away late.

Westminster would hit .405 in the second set with 17 kills to only 10 from the visitors. Alexis Aalona led the way in set two with six of her match-high 13 kills.  The Griffins would close out the match by hitting .288 in the third set behind 19 kills, including five from Andrea Christensen.

The Griffins finished the afternoon hitting .325 for the match. That is a season high and the 10th-best percentage in school history while the 50 total kills are two shy of the three-set record. Westminster added seven service aces and 56 digs while limiting Western to .162 hitting.

Aalona finished the match hitting .385 and added eight digs to her 13 kills. This was the third time in four matches the junior recorded double figures in kills. Christensen finished with a career-high 10 kills while hitting another career-best, .529. She added two service aces and one block as well. Emily Atkinson and Cassandra Fenton had 20 and 16 assists respectively. Kyndall Kordakis posted 15 kills to move within 37 of becoming the school's all-time leader in that category.

Emily Erickson led Western with 11 kills and she hit .409 with eight digs. Brea Mitchell added with kills and three blocks with a .467 hitting percentage.

The Griffins will remain at home for matches next weekend beginning with a 7 p.m. match on Friday against Rocky Mountain (Mont.).
