SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's soccer team begins a three-game Frontier Conference road trip with a visit to Rocky Mountain (Mont.) on Sunday. The lone game of the week will begin at noon from Wendy's Field in Billings, Mont.
GRIFFIN NOTEBOOK
Westminster enters the week at 6-6 on the season and 1-0 in Frontier Conference play. They are coming off a week that saw the Griffins split a pair of home games. They are 0-3 in road games this season and haven't won on the road since October of last season.
The Griffins average 1.58 goals per game and they have scored multiple goals in a game on four occasions this season. They are taking 13.6 shots per game and they put 50.3 percent of those attempts on goal. Westminster has attempted 54 corner kicks and is perfect in the only penalty kick they have taken this season.
The opposition is scoring 0.83 goals per game and Westminster ranks fifth in the country with five shutouts during the season. The Griffins limit the opponent to 6.3 shots per game with 50 percent of those being on frame. They have given up 32 corner kicks and no penalty shots.
AGAINST THE OPPOSITION
Rocky Mountain holds a 9-4-1 edge in the all-time series with Westminster. The Griffins are winless in six trips to Billings, including a 3-1 loss at Wendy's Field last season. The last win in the series for the Griffins was a 5-1 decision in August of 2011. RMC is 2-0-1 in three meetings since then.
LOOKING BACK
Nicole Carter scored in the 88th minute to give the Griffins a 1-0 win over William Jessup last Thursday at Dumke Field. It was Carter's fourth goal of the season and her second game-winner.
Abi Yanke claimed the win in goal with her third consecutive shutout.
Westminster would see its three-game winning streak come to an end when 21st-ranked Cal State San Marcos got a goal from Jessica Wilds in the 76th minute on Sunday. The Griffins outshot the Cougars 10-9, but only had one shot in goal in the loss.
GET THEM FIRST & EARLY
All 12 games this season have been won by the team that scores first. Westminster is 6-0 when they score first and 0-6 when the opponent scores first. The Griffins are also 4-0 when leading at halftime and 6-1 when leading or tied at the 75-minute mark.
LEADS FROM TUCKER
Senior
Lexi Tucker leads the team with 10 points and she is tied for fifth in the league at 0.83 points per game. Tucker has a team-high four assists and is one of three players on the team with three goals on the season. She has taken 32 shots with 18 of those on goal and she leads the team in both categories.
CARTER GETTING HOT
Nicole Carter leads the team with four goals as play begins this week. She has scored three of those four goals over the past four games with two of them being game-winners. Carter is tied for second on the team with 20 shots attempted and she has put 12 of those on goal.
THREE FOR HARRIS
Senior
Jessica Harris is one of the three on the squad with three goals. She opened the year with a double in the season-opener against Jamestown and then snapped a 190-minute scoring drought by the Griffins when she scored at St. Francis (Ill.). Harris entered the season with four career goals and only one since the start of the 2011 campaign. She has matched her career high of three goals set during her freshman campaign on 2010.
MINER ANCHORS THE MIDFIELD
Junior Miranda Miner is the anchor of the Griffin midfield. After leading the team with 1,640 minutes played in 2012, Miner has played a team-high 1,038 minutes this season. She has yet to miss a game during her three seasons as a Griffin, appearing in all 50 games the team has played with 46 starts.
GOALIES SPLITTING TIME
Jamie Wilkinson has made seven starts in goal this season and recorded a 3-4 record. The junior has made 17 saves with a .708 save percentage. She has a 1.00 goals-against-average with two shutouts.
Abi Yanke has started the past five games going 3-2 with three shutouts. She has been named the Frontier's Defensive Player of the Week the past three weeks and has a 0.60 goals-against-average and 11 saves this season. Yanke had a stretch of 356 minutes without allowing a goal snapped in the loss to Cal State San Marcos.
