Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team took advantage of a big offensive showing to take a 4-1 win over Arizona Christian on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Westminster improves to 5-2-1 overall this season and 5-1 at home with the win. The loss drops ACU to 3-3-1 on the year.
The Griffins got on the board in the 17th minute with an own goal by ACU. Westminster's
Ryan Smith attempted a shot from just inside the penalty area that an ACU defender tried to clear and directed it into his own net. Smith would push the lead to 2-0 in the 36th minute as he finished a breakaway attempt for the Griffins.
Manuel Duenas carried the ball up the field and then sent a pass across to Smith who then slid a shot into the goal for his fifth goal of the season.
Chris Cook scored his first goal of the season in the 64th minute when he took a pass from
Liam Harry and fired it into the goal from 20 yards out. ACU scored in the 74th minute as Alfonso headed in a Jesse Gerkey direct kick following a Westminster foul.
Alex Roegiers would complete the day's scoring in the 87th minute when he rebounded a shot by
Chris Cook and put it in the goal for his first tally of the season.
The four goals by the Griffins is a season high and came on a day when they fired 17 shots and out seven on frame. The defense held ACU to just five shots with three on goal. Westminster was awarded six corner kicks and was whistled offsides on five occasions.
Smith and Cook finished the afternoon with a team-best six shots apiece. Smith put two of his on goal while
Anthony Alcox also had two shots on target.
Damir Sabanovic earned his fourth win of the season by making two saves.
Westminster will now hit the road for the longest trip of the season with four games in five days. The trip begins on Wednesday at Friends University at 7 p.m.
