Griffins Go 1-1 on First Day in California

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. – The Westminster College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Asics/Wyndham Hotel Labor Day Invitational on Friday. Westminster defeated The Master's (Calif.) in five sets before being swept by No. 5 Biola to end the day. The tournament is being hosted by Concordia (Calif.) with all matches being played in CU Gym.

The Griffins moved to 7-1 on the season with a 25-22, 25-20, 17-25, 14-25, 15-11 win over The Master's. Westminster handed the Mustangs their first loss of the season despite being outhit in the match .225 to .196. Westminster recorded 51 kills and had eight service aces in the win. They also recorded eight blocks and 74 digs.

Ashley Marchant led the way for the Griffins with 12 kills and Katie Vance added 10 kills with a .321 hitting efficiency.  Marchant added 13 digs while Alexis Aalona had nine kills and 13 digs. Emily Atkinson had a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs and libero Kyndall Kordakis finished with 20 digs.

The second match of the day saw No. 5 Biola snap the Griffins four-match winning streak with a 25-17, 25-8, 25-17 win and drop them to 7-2 overall. Biola (9-1) dominated the match with a 38-23 edge in kills and hitting .385 to just .068 by the Griffins.

Aalona finished with a match-high six kills and hit .238 to carry the Griffins. Marchant and Kenzie Mitchell posted five kills apiece. Atkinson had 11 assists and Kordakis finished with seven digs and eight assists.

Westminster will conclude play at the tournament on Saturday with matches against No. 24 Westmont and No. 2 Concordia. They begin play at 10 a.m. against Westmont and then face CUI at 6 p.m.
