Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team trailed the College of Idaho for much of the game on Sunday before scoring twice in the game's final 15 minutes to earn a 2-1 win. It was the second win in as many days for the Griffins who start the season at 2-0.
College of Idaho would take the lead in the seventh minute when a shot from Emilio Yomaha slid under the hands of the Westminster goalie,
Nathan Young, and just crossed the line. That would be the only goal of the first half for either team as the Yotes took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
Things continued to look bleak for the Griffins late into the second half. Then in the 76th minute,
Wilson Larson played a ball into the penalty are that
Ryan Smith headed to
Jace Maxfield who then headed a shot past the C of I keeper and into the net to level the game. It was the first goal of the year for Maxfield and it seemed to spark the Westminster offense.
It then started to look like overtime could be a possibility in the game until Smith headed a cross from
Jordan Conroy into the net for the game-winner in the 87th minute. It is the first career game-winner for Smith and it came on the team's 19 shot of the contest.
Westminster seemed to be in control of the game for most of the afternoon they just were always trailing. They had a 19-6 advantage in shots attempted and put nine of those on goal. They forced to visitors into five saves in the first half alone. Each team attempted three corner kicks and there was 24 fouls called.
Smith and
Manuel Duenas each fired three shots in the game and both put two of them on frame. Four other Griffins attempted two shots apiece with
Adam Bullough the only other with two shots on goal.
Nathan Young earned the win in goal behind three saves.
Westminster will be back in action on Saturday when they host Doane (Neb.) on Dumke Field. The game will begin at 2 p.m.
