Griffins Defeat Rocky Mountain to Advance to Semis

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – Playing at home for maybe the final time this season, the Westminster College men's basketball team defeated Rocky Mountain College 73-53 in the quarterfinals of the Frontier Conference Tournament on Tuesday evening.

Westminster in the No. 3 seed in the tournament and they advance to the semi-finals for the fourth straight year. They are now 21-10 overall this season. Rocky Mountain was the No. 6 seed and they finish the season with an 18-12 overall record.

The Griffins led the game from wire-to-wire as they raced out to a 19-8 lead over the opening 10 minutes of the contest.  The lead would eventually reach 13 in the first half before RMC used 1 5-6 run to close within four at the 2:26 mark. Westminster would eventually carry a 35-29 lead into the intermission.

The second half would be tightly contested for the first 12 minutes. Everytime Westminster appeared to take control of the game, Rocky would answer and they would eventually use a 9-4 run to trim the Westminster lead to 49-46 with 8:02 to play. The Griffins would then score six straight points and 13 of the next 15 to gain a 14-point cushion with 3:37 remaining. They would close the game with an 11-4 run that was capped with an AJ Reilly runner in the paint.

Reilly finished the game with his second straight 21-point performance. He shot 8-of-12 from the floor and made three of his six attempts from beyond the arc. Jordan Hyater came up with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Hayter added three rebounds and three assists. Ben Walker scored eight points with six rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Jake Orchard and Tanner Gregory scored eight points apiece.

Westminster shot 53.6% from the field and 42.9% from beyond the arc. After being outrebounded by eight in the first half, the Griffins finished the game with a 38-27 rebounding advantage. They scored 11 points from nine offensive rebounds and had 38 points in the paint. The Griffins turned 11 RMC turnovers into 14 points and had 13 assists and seven steals.

Sergio Trocha led Rocky with 13 points and 1-0 rebounds for his Frontier leading seventh double-double of the season.  Nile Finney added 13 points and seven rebounds of the bench.

Westminster will now travel to Dillon, Mont. to face Montana Western in the semi-finals on Friday. UMW is the No. 2 seed and advanced with a 78-56 win over Lewis-Clark State on Tuesday night.
