Carroll Holds off Griffins at Conference Tournament

Box Score BUTTE, Mont. - The Westminster College Griffins and the Carroll College Saints split their regular season matches with each winning on their home court. The stakes for the rubber match of the season were a little higher and Carroll prevailed 3-2 to advance to the conference volleyball semi-finals. Set scores were 25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 25-22 and 15-12.

Second-seeded Carroll will now face the winner of the match between No. 3 University of Great Falls and No. 6 Rocky Mountain College.

Westminster took the early lead in set no. 1 and built a five point lead, 11-6. Carroll slowly chipped away at the Griffin lead and used a 6-1 lead to tie the set at 19. The Saints took their first lead since early in the set on a Westminster attack error. That point proved to be the winning point and Carroll won 25-23.

In the second set, Carroll scored first but Westminster took control on two kills by Emily Atkinson and one by Ashley Marchant. The Griffins stretched their lead to eight. Carroll made the set interesting a late on a series of mini runs, but Westminster held off the Saints and won the second set 25-22.

In set three, Westminster scored first, then Carroll took off on a 3-0 run only to see control slip away on a Westminster 3-0. The two teams then traded leads until the Griffins led 11-8. Carroll then rolled off six straight points to take a 14-11 lead. After exchanging points, Westminster erased the Saints' lead with a 13-4 run to close out the set 25-19.

In set four, ties and lead changes were the tone of the set. With the score tied at 11, a Carroll attack error sparked a 4-0 Westminster run. The Saints answered with a 3-0 run of their own. The two teams then went back to trading points and lead changes. A Westminster attack error tied the set at 21 and then Carroll closed the set out with a 5-1 run and a 25-22 victory.

Carroll took control early in the fifth and deciding set. The Saints opened with 6-1 run. Westminster wasn't ready for the match to end as they picked away at the Carroll lead and used two 3-0 runs to tie the set at 10. Stephanie Jones Morin scored a kill and gave Westminster their first lead since the set's first point. But the lead was short-lived as a Natalie Stewart kill tied the set and began a 5-1 Carroll run to close the set and the match.

Three Saints scored in double figures in kills led by Calli Prestwood and Rebecca Sweeney with 12 each. Catie Hanser led five Carroll players in double figure digs with 36 followed by Sweeney with 25. Carroll outhit the Griffins .164 to .108.

Jones Morin led the Griffins with 14 kills and Marchant and Alexis Aalona had 12 kills each. Marchant and Kyndall Kordakis led the defense with 31 digs followed by 21 from Aalona. The Griffins committed 40 attack errors.
