SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team escaped with a 3-2 win over McPherson College on Saturday at Dumke Field. The Griffins scored three first half goal and then held off a second half rally by the visitors from Kansas for a third consecutive win.
Westminster climbs to 3-1 on the year with the victory while dropping McPherson to 1-1.
Dennis Sellis put Westminster in front with his third goal of the season in the 10th minute. Sellis claimed a rebounded from a shot by
Skyler Doran and put it inside the net. Sellis would then make it 2-0 for the Griffins with another goal in the 36th minute.
Ryan Beck sent a through ball that came to the foot of Sellis who then chipped it over the McPherson keeper from 25 yards away.
Bobby Ward would tally the eventual game-winner with his first goal of the year just three minutes later.
Cole Pollard played a cross to Ward on the outside. Ward then lifted his shot inside the far post from just outside the six-yard box.
McPherson started a second half rally when Geverton Ost cleaned up a scrum in the box off a corner kick in the 61st minute. Juan Garcia when push the score to 3-2 in the 77th minute when he finished a cross from Oscar Cortez.
Westminster held a slim 14-13 advantage in shots attempted and a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. MvPherson attempted four corner kicks to the three by the Griffins and Westminster was whistled for seven fouls.
Sellis again led the attack with six shots and three on frame. This was the third multiple goal game of his career at Westminster. Doran posted two shots with one on frame.
Damir Sabanovic earned the win in goal for the griffins after making three saves and allowing zero goals during his 45 minutes in the first half.
Nathan Young made one save and allowed two goals while playing the second half.
Westminster will return to action on Friday, Sept. 9 when they open a three-game road trip against The Master's College. The game from Santa Clarita, Calif. will begin at 6 p.m.
