SALT LAKE CITY – For the sixth straight game the Westminster College women's soccer team won at Dumke Field. Sunday they defeated the College of Idaho, 4-1, and the Griffins outscored the two opponents from this weekend by a count of 9-2.
Westminster improves to 6-3 overall this season with the victory while the College of Idaho drops to 2-3.
The Griffins got on the board early when
Justine Jones scored her second goal in as many games in just the fourth minute. Jones took a pass from
Jaime Nelson and blasted inside the far post from just outside the penalty area.
The early lead didn't hold for long as Macy Egerman scored for the visiting Yotes in the 13th minute. Jessica Ayala played a ball across the penalty area that settled on the foot of Egerman for her to fire into the net for the equalizer.
Westminster would regain the lead for good in the 24th minute on a goal by
Heather Hillam off a corner kick.
Sarah Swenson played the ball into the box where Hillam would find the ball with her head and direct a shot into the net. The goal was the fourth of the year for Hillam and her second game-winner.
Margo Hickman would get on the board for the Griffins in the second half. The junior scored her fifth goal on the last three games and 10th of the season in the 57th minute.
Corie Walch played the ball out wide to Hickman during a 2-on-1 situation. Hickman fired a shot from 20 yards out inside the far post.
Alyssa Hill would add the final tally for the Griffins in the 80th minute.
Camille Cooper would deliver the ball to Hill allowing her to blast a shot over the head of the keeper and into the net for her second goal of the year. It was also the first career assist for the freshman Cooper.
The Griffins held a 16-7 advantage in shots attempted and put 11 of those shots on frame. Westminster suffered six fouls and took the one corner.
Hickman attempted a team-high five shots with two on frame. Jones, Hill and Cooper blasted two shots apiece and they all put their shots on goal.
Dayna Winter-Nolte recorded five saves and picked up her sixth win of the season and 20th of her career.
The Griffins will now travel to Portland, Ore. for two games next weekend. The trip begins on Sept. 23 with a game against Southern Oregon.
