SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team played Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) to a 1-1 tie on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field. Both teams were playing their third game in three days.
The tie snaps a two-game losing streak for Westminster (4-5-1) but, they are still just 1-4-1 in their last six games after starting the year at 3-1.
It looked like today's game would enter the halftime break in a scoreless tie until Thiago Xavier of Embry-Riddle blasted a shot from 30 yards out that hit the cross bar and bounced into the Griffin net just 52 seconds before halftime. The shot was just the third of the half for the visitors from Ariz.
The lead would remain 1-0 until the 62nd minute. That's when
Wilson Larson sent a free kick into the box that deflected off an Embry-Riddle defender's shin and into the Eagles net for an own goal. Neither team would score during the rest of regulation and the game headed to overtime tied at 1-1.
There were no shots attempted by either team during the first 10 minute overtime period. Westminster would get four attempts off in the second OT period without scoring. The best scoring chance came in the 109th minute when
Dennis Sellis took a cross from
Manuel Duenas and got past the defense, only to see his shot sail over the cross bar.
The Griffins held a 16-9 advantage in shots and out for of those shots on frame. Both teams took three corner kicks and Embry-Riddle was whistled for 15 fouls to the 12 by Westminster.
Sellis took a team-best four shots for the Griffins with none being on frame.
Adam Bullough took three shots while three others had two shots apiece.
KC John made his collegiate debut in the Griffin net and earned the tie by making four saves.
Westminster will return to action on Friday, Sept. 23 when they host Bellevue at 4 p.m. at Dumke Field.
