Great Falls Stuns Griffins in Double Overtime

Box Score BOX SCORE

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team was defeated in double overtime, 3-2, by Great Falls on Saturday afternoon.  The goal came in the 108th minute and gave Westminster (4-5) a second straight home loss.

Things looked up for the Griffins when Sean Aslett got his head on a cross from Wilson Larson and buried it in the net in the 49th minute.  Larson sent his cross in from 40 yards out with Aslett getting above the Great Falls (4-2) defenders to score the goal.  It was Aslett's first goal of the season and the second assist for Larson.

UGF would respond in the 62nd minute when Danny Delgadillo collected a pass from Alex Martinez and put it away for the goal and a 1-1 tie.  Just one minute later, Pedro Chavez put the Argonauts in front 2-1 when his shot from 25 yards bent inside the far post.

It would take into the 80th minute for the Griffins to earn the equalizer.  Larson was dragged down in the penalty area and earned a penalty kick for Westminster.  Dennis Sellis finished the PK for his seventh goal of the year.

Neither team would do anything in the first 10 minute overtime session and things looked to be much of the same in the second OT period.  Then in the 108th minute, Ryan O'Neil sent a cross into the Westminster box that found the foot of Delgadillo and bounced into the net for the game winner.

Westminster was outshot in the game 21-16 and put eight of their shots on goal.  They also attempted seven corner kicks ad suffered nine fouls.

Sellis fired a team-best five shots with three on frame.  Larson and Bryan Rucklos managed two shots apiece.  Damir Sabanovic recorded seven saves but, suffered the loss in the Griffin goal.

Westminster will look to snap this two-game losing streak on Sunday when they host Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) on Dumke Field at 1:30 p.m.
