Griffins Look to Bounce Back with Two Home Games

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's soccer team looks to bounce back from two losses last week with games at Dumke Field.  Westminster will face Kansas Wesleyan on Friday at noon and then play the College of Idaho on Sunday at 11 a.m.  Kansas Wesleyan and College of Idaho will play on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Griffin Notebook
Westminster enters the week at 4-3 after dropping two games against ranked opponents last week in Alabama.  The Griffins have posted a 4-1 record on Dumke Field this season and have won four straight at home.  For the year the average 2.57 goals per game and rank 46th nationally in that category while the 18 total goals is 13th nationally.

Margo Hickman is off to a fast start with team highs in goals (6) and assists (3).  Her 15 points are already the fourth-most in a single season in school history.  She leads the Frontier Conference in all three categories while also posting two game-winning goals.  Sarah Swenson has scored four goals with one assist and Heather Hillam has three goals and two assists.

Dayna Winter-Nolte has made 29 saves with a .707 save percentage.  She has earned four victories with a 1.72 goals against average and one shutout.

Game Coverage
Both games this week, along with the Kansas Wesleyan vs. College of Idaho game, will feature live stats.  The live stat feed will be available at WestminsterGriffins.com and can also be accessed from your mobile device.

Promotions
Friday fans can get $2 tickets by wearing Griffin apparel.  There will be shooting contest for prizes at halftime.  Sunday's game in Utah Food Bank Support Day.  Anyone bringing 2 cans of food will receive 2-for-1 tickets.

Friday's Opponent: No. 25 Kansas Wesleyan
Kansas Wesleyan makes the trek to Salt Lake City at 3-0 overall.  The Coyotes have outscored the opposition 6-1 with two shutouts and rank sixth nationally in shutouts per game at 0.67.  They are coming off a 2-0 win over Morningside (Iowa) on Saturday.

Araceli Sanchez has scored a team-best two goals while Hannah Kern has one goal and one assist.  Araceli Sanchez and Crystal Sanchez have each tallied one game-winning goal.  Amanda Radich averages 6.00 saves per game with a 0.33 GAA.

Saturday's Opponent: College of Idaho
College of Idaho visits SLC at 2-1 overall and have yet to play a team from the NAIA.  The Coyotes picked up wins over Northwest Nazarene and Trinity Lutheran while losing to Cal Baptist last Saturday.  The team averages two goals per game and allowed four in the loss to CBU.

Six different players have scored for C of I with Jessica Ayala and Taylor Culver adding one assist for three points.  Chelsea Heffner has three assists to lead the team.  Aimee Pierson and Melissa Holmes-Joseph have split time in goal with Pierson making a team-best seven saves.

Looking Back
Westminster dropped two games to ranked opponents in Ala. over the weekend.  No. 7 William Carey defeated the Griffins 2-1 thanks to a goal in the 87th minute.  Westminster then rallied from a 4-0 deficit before eventually falling to No. 22 Mobile in double overtime, 5-4.

The Hickman Show
Junior forward Margo Hickman has scored six goals with three assists in the team's first seven games.  Her 15 total points rank fourth in school history for a single season and fifth for a career.  She leads the Frontier Conference in 10 offensive categories, including goals, assists and points.

Hickman is coming off a two goal and five point performance against Mobile on Saturday.  It was her first multiple goal game of the year and her five points are the second-most in a game in school history.  Hickman has at least one point in six of the seven games played this year.

Scoring Swenson
After being held scoreless in the first four games of the season, senior Sarah Swenson has responded with four goals in the last three games.  Swenson is second on the team with four goals and nine points while attempting 10 shots.

During this stretch, she has moved to third in school history with 12 career goals.  Swenson is also tied with Vanessa Jordan for the school record with nine career assists.

Dumke Advantage
The Griffins have posted a 23-9-1 all-time record on the fast surface of Dumke Field.  They have never dropped more than two games in a season and have started 4-1 at home this season.  Westminster plays nine games at home this year including the first five on the slate.  They went 5-2 at home in 2010.

Massey Ratings
After two losses last week, Westminster slipped from 15th to 31st in the latest edition of the Massey ratings that were released on Sunday.  The Griffins have a rating of 0.361 and sit one spot ahead of Frontier Conference foe Carroll College.  The ratings have Westminster with the fifth-best home advantage while having played the 31st-toughest schedule.

The Massey Ratings are compiled each week with new ranking being released on Mondays.  Kenneth Massey is the creator of the rating formula and all ratings can be found on his web site at www.masseyratings.com.

Playing the Best
The Westminster women's soccer team is playing maybe the toughest slate of games in school history this season. The Griffins will face five teams that qualified for the 2010 NAIA National Championships and 11 opponents that won at least 10 games last season.

The 15 teams on the 2011 schedule combined to go 153-98-32 (.597) last season. They combined to win eight games at the national tournament with no team that qualified losing an opening round contest.  Westminster will also face seven teams that are ranked in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Coaches' Poll and two more that received votes in the poll.

Frontier Conference vs. Cal Pac Conference
Dumke Field will play host to the Frontier/Cal Pac Conference Tournament on Nov. 11-12.  The top four teams from the two conferences will compete for an automatic invite to the NAIA National Championships.  The semi-finals will be played on Friday with the title games being played on Saturday.  Games times will be announced at a later date.
