Friday's Opponent: La Sierra
La Sierra will come to town at 2-0 on the season. They opened the year with a 2-1 win over No. 4 Vanguard and then took a 7-0 decision versus Arizona Christian.
Jonas Ornelas, Luis Escamilla and Diego Fontes have all scored two goals apiece for the Golden Eagles. Fontes has added two assists for a team-leading six points. Escamilla has five points and David Nolan has recorded two assists. Gabriel Esqueda has picked up two wins between the pipes while making five saves.
Monday's Opponent: McPherson College
McPherson enters the season off a disappointing 2010 campaign that saw the Bulldogs end the regular season with a 9-9-1 overall record and 5-4-0 mark in league play. Despite the lack luster regular season, MC advanced to the semifinal round of the KCAC Men's Soccer Postseason Tournament before falling to eventual tournament champion Kansas Wesleyan University.
Head coach Doug Quint's 2011 squad features 15 newcomers to join a strong core of returners, including six starters from last season. Senior defender and team captain Tyler Tank is back to lead MC for his senior season. Tank scored a career-high four goals in 2010.
Continuing Where He Left Off
Westminster senior forward Sellis continued exactly where he left off after last season's injury. Sellis attempted 10 shots during the opening weekend and scored the game winning goal against Rocky Mountain. Sellis scored eight goals and five game winners in just 10 games in 2010.
Frontier Players of the Week
Westminster swept the first Frontier Conference Player of the Week awards. Sellis was named the Frontier's offensive player of the week after his six shot (three on goal) performance against Baker. It was the fifth time that he has been honored by the conference with the weekly award.
Goalkeeper Sabanovic earned defensive player of the week honors after posting eight saves in the loss to Baker. Sabanovic won the weekly award for the third time in his career.
Dumke Advantage
The Griffins have posted a 39-12-3 all-time record on the fast surface of Dumke Field. In the past four seasons Westminster is 20-4-2 at home, including 5-0-1 in 2008. They were 8-2 at home last year and outscored the opposition 14-6 in those 10 contests.
Among the Best
Westminster head coach
Chris Dorich enters his 28th season at the helm of the program. He has totaled 247 wins in his career and ranks 25th in NAIA history in that category. Dorich also ranks 10th in career victories among active NAIA coaches.
The New Griffins TV
Westminster, along with the Victory Sports Network, have created a channel on Livestream to become the new online streaming home of the Westminster Griffins. The new Griffins TV channel can be found at WestminsterGriffins.com or at
Livestream.com/griffins and will stream five men's soccer home games this fall.
Unaffiliated Conference
The NAIA approved the creation of a second Unaffiliated Conference that included the teams of the Frontier Conference and four teams from the Association of Independent Institutions. The new conference will feature: Embry-Riddle (Ariz.), Great Falls (Mont.), Jamestown College (N.D.), Marymount University (Calif.), Rocky Mountain (Mont.), Soka University (Calif.) and Westminster.
The conference tournament will be held at Dumke Field in November. The top four ranked teams will qualify for the tournament with two semi-final games on November 11 and the championship on November 12.
