Griffins Drop Two Matches at Bison Blast

SHAWNE, Okla. – The Westminster College women's volleyball team dropped matches against two nationally ranked opponents on Saturday at the Bison Blast. Westminster lost to No. 4 Texas at Brownsville in three sets and then dropped a four-set match with No. 19 Oklahoma Baptist to end the tournament.

The Griffins split the four matches they played at the weekend tournament and are now 2-2 on the season.

Westminster got off to a slow start and never recovered in the loss to Brownsville. The fourth-ranked team in the country won the match by scores of 25-11, 25-17, 25-21.

Ashley Marchant led the Griffins with eight kills in the match while adding five digs and one block. Kenzie Mitchell posted seven kills and two digs while setter Emily Atkinson went for a double-double with 26 assists and 10 digs.

The host Oklahoma Baptist took the win from the Griffins by the scores of 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17.

The match was a dig fest as the two teams combined for 224 total digs. The Griffins totaled 97 digs as a team with five players reaching double figures and two topping 20 digs. Marchant led the offense with 12 kills and had her third double-double in four matches with 13 digs. Kyndall Kordakis snagged 21 digs and Jenna Harp had a career high 20. Katy Waldie added 18 digs while Atkinson had 35 assists and 12 digs.

Westminster will return to action on Friday Sept. 2 when they face No. 5 Biola and No. 6 Azusa Pacific during the opening day of the Asics/Crowne Plaza Labor Day Tournament in Irvine, Calif. They will then face No. 1 Fresno Pacific and San Diego Christian on Saturday.
