SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Baker University in the season opener for each team on Friday. The game's only score came from Odaine Sinclair in the 13th minute for the visitors from Kansas.
Westminster drops a season opener for the first time since 2009 and is now 0-1 on the year. Baker starts the year at 1-0.
The goal was filled with controversy as Sinclair got his head on a ball that was being played by Griffin goalkeeper
Damir Sabanovic. The ball Sinclair scored on came off a headed ball by Andy Griffin that was sent in by Tom Lowndes. Westminster argued that Sabanovic had his hands on the ball before Sinclair scored, but the play was ruled a goal.
Westminster posted three solid scoring chances in the early portion of the first half.
Wilson Larson got his head on a corner kick from
Ryan Smith, but put it over the top of the frame in the 56th minute.
Dennis Sellis then hit the post from 25 yards on a set piece in the 59th minute. Sellis would then blast a shot high just seconds later.
The game was fairly physical with 17 fouls and four cautions being given. Westminster attempted 12 shots in the game to just eight by the Wildcats. Westminster had four of those shots on frame with each being turned away by the Baker keeper Matt Bickley.
Sellis finished with a team-best six shots and had three on target.
Skyler Doran was the only other Griffin to get a shot on frame on his only attempt. Sabanovic recorded eight saves between the pipes.
The Griffins return to action on Monday, August 29 when they host Rocky Mountain at 6 p.m. on Dumke Field. That is the Frontier Conference opener for each team and the game will be broadcast live the Griffins streaming channel at
